Free Tourism Advice

The office and teaching staffs are always happy to answer student questions about activities around Buenos Aires and all of Argentina.  As locals, they tend to know about transportation, costs, safety issues, and of course, how to have fun!

Activities Reports

In this section we will describe some of the activities we have recently organized for our students. The detailed descriptions below show exactly what type of activities we typically organize.

Visit to Tigre

15 Íbero students went with the activities coordinator to spend a whole day in the fresh air of Tigre.  It was a sunny but cool day, ideal for being outside.  We started with a lunch in a fun Argentine barbeque restaurant (una parrilla), and then we went around el Puerto de Frutos.  We ended the day with an hour-long boat tour of the delta.  It was incredible!

MALBA Museum

We took advantage of the free admission on Wednesdays to the Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires (MALBA; Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires).  We went to get to know the fantastic museum and its works of art.  Then we had a submarino, a hot drink of milk with a melted chocolate bar, in the museum café.  It was a great interesting cultural outing!

Dinner and dancing in a Cuban restaurant

We ate dinner in a typical Cuban restaurant.  There was a live show and then we stayed to dance salsa and merengue.  We had a great time and we were all able to show our dancing abilities.

La Bomba de Tiempo

We went to the show called La Bomba in the neighborhood of Abasto.  It is a percussion performance with 15 people on stage playing drums.  We danced, we listened to really good music and we had a couple of cold beers.  It was a great and fun night!

Rock & roll and tango classes at La Viruta

We took a rock & roll dancing class, which was similar to swing dancing, and then a tango class.  There were many students, each one at a different level in the class.  Then we all stayed in the milonga (tango dance hall) to practice what we had learned.  Besides dancing with each other, we met a lot of locals, because many people go to La Viruta to learn the tango and other styles.  It was an incredible experience!

Lunch at Pizzería Guerrín

We went to lunch on Avenida Corrientes with Cecilia to one of the most traditional pizzerias in Buenos Aires, Guerrín.  We were about 15 people, new students and students that have been at Íbero for awhile, including a nice group of Brazilians on vacation.  We also met to talk about new activities for the coming weeks like soccer!  We had a very fun lunch.

The Buenos Aires Zoo

Last Wednesday we went to the zoo.  It was an unforgettable trip.  All 17 of us walked around the zoo to see the different exhibits for two and a half hours.  It is definitely a must-see for any tourist who wants to explore the city.

Soccer/Football game

With so many Brazilian students currently at our school, we decided to organize a soccer game between the Brazilians and the students of other nationalities.  We rented a five-on-five soccer field and played for an hour and a half, men and women, who were all classmates at Íbero.  It was a incredible Thursday afternoon!

Argentine Mate Afternoon

We learned how to drink the traditional Argentine mate with our coordinator in a bar in Palermo.  The service was great, with all the elements to form a close-knit group and to drink mate like a real Argentine.  Not only were their medialunas (Croissants), but also toasted bread, and cheesey bread, and sweets of all kinds.  It was a tasty afternoon snack that we shared.

Fair of Mataderos

We had an unforgettable trip to the Fair of the Mataderos.  We were able to enjoy hot food on a cool, but sunny day with 15 students from all over the world.  Our great coordinator gave an incredible tour.  We even got to see a cowboy show!

Trip to La Boca

Last Sunday we went to La Boca.  We visited the Caminito, walked around for a while, we ate some good ravioli, and we also visited La Bombonera, Boca's soccer stadium, where the famous Argentine soccer star known throughout the world started: Diego Maradona.

Conversation and mate at Bar Estilo San Telmo

This week we had two conversation classes at café in the center of Buenos Aires. As we practiced our Spanish and got to know one another, we enjoyed one of Argentina’s best traditions: a delicious bitter mate. Juan Ignacio explained to us the history of mate, as well as the specific way to drink it.

Dinner at Parrilla El Desnivel

On Wednesday, a group of 14 of us went to a parrilla in the classic neighborhood of San Telmo. There we tried all types of meat, proving that Argentine beef is indeed superb. We had fantastic services and great food. Later we went to a nearby bar to continue getting to know one another, and we shared beers and some good times

Lunch at Pippo

On Monday we had a welcome lunch for all of Íbero´s new students. We went to Pippo, a well-known traditional parrilla founded in 1937.We had the opportunity to speak with the owner of the restaurant, who told us the history of the parrilla, and we had a great time trying the best cuts of Argentine beef.

SOCIAL LIFE

Here at Íbero you will not just study Spanish, but you will also meet people from all around the world while studying in the diverse city of Buenos Aires.

Íbero can customize any study abroad program by assembling activity- and education- based modules that couple relevant cultural activities with task- based and communicative classroom time. We´ve been doing this program for years; therefore, you can trust your  time here will be grounded in tried-and-true activities and course study plans for an ideal educational experience.

Íbero has an activities coordinator whose only job is to help Íbero students have fun!  The school also offers free on-sight activities each week, publishes a weekly activities plan and provides free tourism advice.  The goal of these activities is for students to practice their Spanish in a relaxed environment, while at the same time getting to know their classmates and exploring new places throughout the city.

v

At Íbero, we help our students get to know the lovely city that is Buenos Aires through organizing activities 7 days a week. We structure our activities to take place in the evening as well as the afternoon so that all students have an opportunity to attend regardless of when they have their TEFL or Spanish class.

Samples of the trips planned for Íbero students include the following:

·        Day Trip to Tigre and Delta: This trip leaves directly from Íbero and brings students to visit the Cathedral of San Isidro, Tigre´s stunning Puerto de Frutos and to the island of Delta via a boat ride.

·        Day Trip to San Antonio de Areco: This trip includes a visit to the town as well as Estancia Argentina.  With lavish meals, singing and folklore, this is a true estancia experience.  Plus, students can enjoy tango classes, a demonstration of Creole workmanship and, of course, a nice cup of mate.

·        Bike Tour of Buenos Aires: Running from the Plaza de Mayo to the National Congress, this tour stops at a variety of heritage and monument sights.  It also dips into the neighborhoods of Monserrat, San Telmo, La Boca and Puerto Madero, hitting a long list of attractions along the way.

·        Dinner Tango Show: A night at the Boca Tango Country Restaurant features beef cooked on embers and great ambiance.  This trip also features a stop to see a staging of El Conventillo Viviente, and final stop to the Stained Class Café is the entryway to the Tango Salon.

·        Tango Lessons. With the best and most experienced Tango teachers at a very typical tango house, where you can also participate in “milongas” (Tango Dance)

·        Conversation Clubs: Every week Íbero has a ¨Taller de Conversación¨ at a different café or bar in the city. This spoken Spanish workshop gives students the opportunity to talk about any topic they wish in a more social setting outside of the classroom.

·        Cultural and Social Activities. Most  all of our other activities are free of charge or are very affordable (the price of a coffee or entrance to a museum). Other activities have including trips to museums in the city, going to a tango lesson, experiencing traditional music live, or simply eating some regional specialties.

·        Football matches, at legendary stadiums like Boca Juniors or River Plate.

·        Free Volunteer Program in Buenos Aires. Taking advantage of the possibility to volunteer while studying Spanish in Buenos Aires allows students to use the language while helping improve the community at the same time. Those students who choose to take part in volunteering not only find their Spanish to improve as a result but remark that the experience is very fulfilling. While most volunteer programs in the city charge students who wish to participate, the organization we partner with does not.  It is a volunteer organization that works to improve the lives of children living below the poverty line through academic classes, games, and other activities.

·        Argentinean Cinema. We offer a weekly movie screening at the School which allows students to practice comprehension and vocabulary. Our activities coordinator selects a well known Argentine film each week and our students watch the movie with Spanish subtitles if they wish.

After that, we went to the stadium of one of the biggest soccer clubs in Argentina, Boca Juniors. We couldn’t enter, but nevertheless we were able to go to the club’s museum, known as the Museo de La Pasión Boquense. Museum Xul Solar

On Wednesday we had a cultural outing, and we went to one of Recoleta´s most important museums, Museo Xul Solar. The museum is a refurbished home once inhabited by Schultz Solar, an extremely important artist who brought European avant-garde art to Argentina. At the museum they told us that Solar was a very good friend of Jorge Luis Borges. It was a wonderful afternoon amidst Argentine art.

Shamrock Bar
